Difference between the Principle of RCCB Residual Current Circuit Breaker and Circuit Protection
Principle of RCCB Residual Current Circuit Breaker
● Working Principle:
RCCB primarily monitors the difference between the loop current and the leakage current to automatically cut off the current when leakage is detected. It operates based on Kirchhoff's law, which dictates that the sum of currents entering and leaving a node in a circuit must be equal. RCCB utilizes this principle to compare and analyze the difference in current magnitude between the phase and neutral lines.
● Current Detection:
During electrical faults caused by leakage from the live wire, the returning current to the neutral line diminishes, creating a residual current difference between the input live wire and the output neutral wire. Once RCCB detects this residual current, it promptly trips and disconnects the circuit.
● Structural Composition:
The RCCB device comprises a current transformer with three types of windings: primary, secondary, and sensing windings. The sensing winding, positioned between the primary and secondary windings, connects to the relay coil. Upon detecting residual current, the current in the sensing coil drives either the trip relay or permanent magnet relay (PMR), delivering the required pulse to trip the RCCB contacts and disconnect the circuit.
Features of RCCB in Circuit Protection
● Leakage Protection:
RCCB is primarily used to detect circuit leakage and automatically disconnect the power supply to safeguard personal safety.
● Overload and Short Circuit Protection:
In addition to leakage protection, RCCB includes functions for overload and short circuit protection. Upon detecting overload or short circuit conditions, RCCB swiftly cuts off the power supply to prevent equipment damage and fire hazards.
● High Sensitivity:
RCCB boasts high sensitivity, capable of detecting minute leakage currents (typically below 10mA), and promptly disconnecting the power supply when leakage occurs. This sensitivity enables RCCB to swiftly identify and mitigate potential risks of electric shock, effectively protecting lives.
● Application Scope:
RCCB finds primary use in leakage protection for residential settings and small industrial equipment. In these applications, RCCB ensures reliable electrical safety and reduces the incidence of electric shock accidents and electrical fires.
